CHOOSING TO CARE.

CHOOSING TO CARE.

How did you become involved with care? Was it a career path you chose to do or a situation you suddenly found yourself in?

For the moment , I want to focus on those who CHOOSE care as a career. More importantly, why?

For me, I chose to do it. I simply wanted to help. Doesn’t sound like a big ‘save the world’ moment, does it? However, sometimes, the simplest of motives can encourage the greatest of changes.

The early morning hello or the end of day last checks are among many of reassured moments that your help has made a difference to somebody’s day.

For those of us involved ,we know there is a lot more to it than that. Which is why I have always took the stance of ‘if you choose to work in care because it’s just another job with a pay packet and it is easy to get in to and they are always looking for carers….think again!’

Care isn’t just another job. Care is exactly what it says on the tin ‘CARE’.

Definition Time!

‘CARE – THE PROVISION OF WHAT IS NECESSARY FOR THE HEALTH, WELFARE, MAINTENANCE AND PROTECTION OF SOMEONE OR SOMETHING.

- SERIOUS ATTENTION OR CONSIDERATION APPLIED TO DOING SOMETHING CORRECTLY OR TO AVOID DAMAGE OR RISK.

- FEEL CONCERN OR INTEREST.

- LOOK AFTER AND PROVIDE FOR THE NEEDS OF ..’

I would also like to add the following:

DIGNITY,RESPECT, VALUES, MORALES,COMPASSION, UNDERSTANDING, EMPATHY,PATIENCE, TIMEKEEPING, ENERGY, ABILITY TO REORGANISE AT A MINUTES NOTICE, CALM, GOOD COMMUNICATION, CHEERFULNESS, DISCRETION, ADVOCACY, REASSURANCE, ENCOURAGEMENT, ACKNOWLEDGMENT….the list goes on.

What would you add to it?

WEE, POO & YOU TOO!

For the sake of reality but without going into too much detail, I’m sure many of you would be thinking, ‘what about poo, wee and vomiting?’ Yep, we can add those too. I’m sure we all have many stories to tell! You and I know that regardless of what time of the day it is or how tired you may feel…it has to be cleared up and the gentleman or lady refreshed and made comfortable. I certainly wouldn’t like it if I was left to sit in it until the next carer came in….would you? More importantly, for those of us who really do care…none of these are a problem….it happens, we get on with it, no big deal.

Once again, if you are thinking of going for that carers job for a bit of cash but you turn your nose up at what has just been written, I urge you to think again.

Seniors Socializing

For those of you who already care, I would love to hear what inspired you to follow the path of caring for others.

(oh, and something you may not hear very often but is very much deserved…THANK YOU.x)
