Careworkers & Compassion Fatigue Syndrome.

“WHAT IS IT?

Compassion Fatigue is the emotional state of the helping person/ care worker that becomes affected.

On a day to day basis ,and over time, it can become a struggle to function in a caregiving enviroment .

Constant challenges of all kinds -emotional-physical & personal; to name just a few.

We use empathy and open our hearts and feelings to others, and can be affected by what they are experiencing. Over time, it can reach a point whereby the emotional fatigue affects our ability to be compassionate in all areas of our lives both personal and professional.”

This is something I have recognised on a personal level. Once, you begin to understand and read a little more about it, you may just become aware of this among those you work along side.

Sadly, these may be all too familiar and very often become ‘just one of those things.’

• High absenteeism

• Constant changes in co-workers relationships

• Inability for teams to work well together

• Desire among staff members to break company rules.

• Outbreaks of aggressive behaviours among staff.

• Inability of staff to complete assignments and tasks

• Inability of staff to respect and meet deadlines

• Lack of flexibility among staff members

Negativism towards management

Strong reluctance toward change

Inability of staff to believe improvement is possible

• Lack of a vision for the future

Having gone through the list, how many of you have ‘silently’ said ‘YES’ to any of them?

Do you think yourself /team/staff would benefit from support and understanding?
